Joint degree by: Open University of Cyprus, School of Pure and Applied Sciences and University of Cyprus, Department of Psychology and Department of Computer Science. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME Since the inception of the computing paradigm, the prevalent metaphor for a computer has been that of a multi-purpose tool, as exemplified by the use of “command lines” and “desktops” at the interface between humans and computers. The unparalleled prevalence of computing-enabled devices in our everyday lives, and the widespread access to information over the Web, suggests a more apt metaphor for a modern computer, that of an assistant. Humans no longer use, but rather collaborate with their devices to solve a cognitive task, with each party learning and adapting to the capabilities of the other. Communication and decision-making happens at a level that is transparent to, and cognitively-compatible with, human abilities and limitations. One no longer speaks of human-computer interaction, but of human-computer symbiosis. To teach the new paradigm of cognitive computing, the M.Sc. Program in Cognitive Systems brings together two main scientific areas: Cognitive Psychology, and Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science. Aiming, on the one hand, for the prospective students to understand the basis for human cognition, the Program is strongly influenced by Cognitive Psychology and includes learning modules that explore the fundamentals of perception, learning, mental representation, and reasoning in humans. Aiming, on the other hand, for the prospective students to be able to design cognitive systems, the Program places its emphasis on the investigation of computational methods and tools for understanding and designing cognitive systems, and includes learning modules from Connectionist and Symbolic Artificial Intelligence, from Machine Learning, and learning modules on recent developments in Cognitive Computing. Courses are offered from both Cognitive Psychology (CP) and Computer Science (CS), organized in five main themes: Foundations, Perception, Learning, Reasoning, Systems. GRADUATES CAN BE EMPLOYED – CAREER PROSPECTS With a Master’s in Cognitive Systems, graduates have employment opportunities in the two traditional areas of Cognitive Psychology and Computer Science, but also in the new emerging area of Cognitive Systems. Generally speaking, graduates of the program will be qualified to contribute to basic and applied research aiming at the optimization of human-computer interaction and/or the application of computational tools in the understanding of cognition (research, research and development, and research and innovation at public and private centers/companies). In particular, students will be able to work in organizations in the areas of intelligent systems, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and cognitive system development, with large companies such as IBM, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple actively seeking, and offering lucrative salaries for, employees in the emerging areas that are covered by the program of study. Their ability to design and develop systems also offers the opportunity to graduates to work as developers in large software companies, with the ability to incorporate in the traditional software development cycle novel and cutting-edge techniques that are inspired by human cognition. The graduates’ knowledge of cognitive psychology theories and methodologies will further allow them the choice of working in treatment and health facilities, helping people with cognitive disabilities, while exploiting their expertise in the development of cognitive systems to develop novel solutions for patients. Irrespectively of the focus of their studies, graduates will be well-versed in an exciting new area of research that can lead them to pursue a Ph.D. program at Open University of Cyprus, University of Cyprus, or at other competitive Ph.D. programs across the world. ACCREDITED - Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education The Open University of Cyprus (OUC), through its participation in the European project "Liaison Offices with the Labour Market", offers to students of all its programmes of study, the optional and free of charge Thematic Unit (i.e. Module) entitled "Industry Placement". The Master in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice reflects the priorities of the University’s mission, is designed to provide a course of studies that meets local and national needs, promotes links with local communities and embraces modern pedagogy and learning technologies. The Master (MA) in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice will be offered by the School of Law that is dedicated to the academic excellence through teaching and research. Specializing in a particular field is a smart choice for everyone interested in pursuing a career in that field. In that perspective the specialization in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice provides a well-designed, practice oriented, academic, post graduate education for those, on the one hand, practicing already criminal law as lawyers, prosecutors or judges, and for those, on the other, who are graduate students, aspiring to become leaders in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure in a national and European environment. During recent decades transnational Financial crime has become a major area of concern for politicians and policy makers and an increasingly important area of research. This has transformed Financial crime from a very specific area of practice, to a “day-to-day” practice, similar to civil litigation with a lot of research, drafting, factual development and argument, but with more significant client contact, which tends to be very close. Our MA Specialization in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice intends to examine the phenomenon in terms of its recent emergence and further development, as well as to highlight typical forms and law enforcement responses to transnational organized crime. Accordingly, the aim of the program is not only to pursue an academic theoretical study, but also to enable theory to inform practice. The program is divided thematically between substantive issues of Financial crime and procedural issues within an Economic crime trial. In both cases emphasis is given on the transnational character of both the crime and the trial. Among the substantive areas which are covered are: Corporate Penal Law, Corruption – Bribery, Tax evasion, Organized crime, Money laundering, Misuse of Capital Market, Cybercrime, Fraud against the EU’s financial interests, Market Abuse, Cybercrime and Money Laundering. Participants will also learn how to deal with complex procedural matters arising in an Economic criminal trial with transnational elements, such as the principle of ne bis in idem, the rule of speciality in mutual assistance, the procedure in freezing property etc. |

The MA in Visual Art program encourages students to challenge and explore conventional boundaries of various art and design disciplines, borrowing and experimenting creatively. Interdisciplinary methodologies are investigated and applied aiming in the advancement and development of new and novel art and design discourses. The program encourages and respects critical theory as well as in depth understanding of material and the practice of making. Furthermore, it offers a close relation with the creative and professional industries and provides opportunities for collaboration on real life local and international projects. Emphasis is placed upon pushing forward critical discourses in a challenging and provocative way, indicating relations to key discourses within the contemporary arena, as well as building upon a personal visual language that is both informed of current trends and innovative. The program aspires to bring together students from diverse backgrounds that will have the opportunity to interact and develop skills necessary to envision a rapidly growing interdisciplinary culture. Committing to a balanced input of theory and practice, the program fosters professional initiative, self-motivation and ambition, desire for positive social change, cultural responsibility and environmental ethics as well as imaginative, out-of-the-box creativity. Tailored to the individual needs and skills of the students, the program gives them the opportunity to develop creatively, to find new experimental applications of their ideas and meet their individual aspirations. Through a series of self-initiated projects and personal tutorials the students are enabled to develop their creative identity and individuality. In doing so students are encouraged in bringing into context their real-life experiences, skills and practice. Conceptual and theoretical issues will be relatively brought up, studied and tackled through courses of Visual and Critical Thinking and Contextual Studies. These courses are primarily engaged with the systematic study of core notions, concepts and disputes of and around critical theory, philosophy, the art and design history, aesthetics and relative studies. Furthermore, research will be promoted by means of encouraging the development of collaboration between the university and other academic and social partners on a local, regional (Mediterranean) and international level. The establishment of such networks is critical in acquiring experience, achieving effective exploitation of research results, resulting in good practice examples and innovation. In order to build a strong art and design research culture with proficient methodological skills the program offers the course of Research Methods that will introduce and provide students with all necessary and relevant competencies and tools in order to encourage and engage them into such a culture. Students will also be introduced to a variety of subjects and media through the art and design electives, that have been methodically structured to provide students with in-depth understanding of primal issues and crucial lines of enquiries in the Art and Design Field; The program aspires to bring together students from diverse backgrounds that will have the opportunity to interact and develop skills necessary to envision a rapidly growing interdisciplinary culture in art and design practices. Committing to a balanced input of theory and practice, the program fosters professional initiative, self-motivation and ambition, desire for positive social change, cultural responsibility and environmental ethics as well as imaginative, out-of-the-box creativity. The vision of the MA program is to motivate, inspire and encourage students to approach art and design through non-conventional understandings, beyond predictable applications and expectations of what design might be and push the development into new forms and applications borrowing expertise from graphic, interior and media design as well as the fine arts. The program aspires for students to explore that area between design and art which will grand them the opportunity to develop their thinking, ideas and even their personalities beyond conventional standards. The program is anchored in the area of Fine Art and Applied Art, allowing each individual student to follow the areas of expertise provided by two major streams, which reflect the needs of upcoming new industries:
INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN Interdisciplinary Design students will be introduced to the applied art field through an awareness about fields such as space and form alternatives, curatorial and displaying practices, object and materiality issues, installation and art aesthetics, new media, moving image, animation, web design, alternative visualizing methods, interactivity and materiality issues. In all cases students will be introduced to the technologies that precede these topics. Students attending this pathway will have the opportunity to work on real life projects, work and co-operate with active professionals from the design industry, deliver projects for clients coming from the public or private sector, as well as investigate their professional opportunities in a network of design related individuals, agencies and industries. CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICES Through this pathway, the students are introduced and ‘guided to’ contemporary methods, techniques, approaches and practices of the fine art field through systematic exploration and work development primarily in the art studio. These fundamental courses will enable students to locate practical areas of study, to experiment and resolve problems relating their medium, materials, concepts and methods through ongoing practice, group and one to one tutorial, critiques, exhibition visits as well as local and international project initiations. In addition, the students will be presented with a series of talks and presentations by renowned artists, theorists, curators, art historians, thinkers and cultural producers in order to become engaged in contemporary disputes, subjects and art processes. The program is strongly engaged in this very interrelation of contemporary cultural debates to contemporary art practices and for this very reason the students will be further exposed to critical and current disputes as reflected in the art processes, applications, mediums and materials through the courses of Visual Processes and Applications; a course that examines critical positions, histories and renderings/interpretations of the art object through The specific goals of the program are:
The language of instruction is English. Key Learning Outcomes

The Postgraduate Study Programme MSc in Forensic Accounting is a joint Inter-university Degree Study Programme between the Department of Accounting and Finance of University of Western Macedonia (GR) and the Department of Accounting and Finance of Neapolis University Pafos. Students and graduates of the joint programme in Forensic Accounting are eligible to apply and get the certificate CICA (Certified Internal Control Auditor) from the Institute of Internal Controls – IIC (www.theiic.org) through the Greek branch ELINESEE. The course focuses on two interrelated areas a) fraud deterrence, avoidance and examination and b) internal audit. The fraud cases, both internal and external, are common and they have a negative impact on businesses; institutions; employees and the wider community. Contrary to the perception that fraud concerns more the major institutions, based on the global studies the truth seems to be substantially different. The Institute of Internal Auditors defines fraud as «a knowing misrepresentation of truth or concealment of a material fact to induce another to act to or her detriment», while the association of the Certified Fraud Examiners defines it as «any illegal act characterized by deceit, concealment or violation of trust». Frauds are distinguished to internal and external frauds from which internal frauds are far more dangerous. The association of the Certified Fraud Examiners defines the occupational/ internal fraud as «the use of one’s occupation for personal enrichment through the deliberate misuse or misapplication of the organization’s resources or assets». Even though there are many different definitions, the substance is the same. Internal fraud is an attack from within, committed by persons that organizations have trusted. Despite the fact that the exact financial loss of occupational fraud cannot be estimated precisely due the fact that many frauds remain undetected or undisclosed, ACFE estimates that companies in the US, lose 5% of their total revenue to occupational fraud and abuse, while the most vulnerable organizations seem to be the smaller organisations rather than multinational companies. Taking into consideration that a) the great majority of companies in an economy are small and medium size, and b) the financial impact of fraud on these companies is much more significant than in the case of their large competitors, the need for fraud awareness and fraud risk management is obvious. As far as the second main area covered by the programme, that of internal audit, its importance in the current business structure is so apparent that in many instances the establishment of internal audit function is mandatory by the Law or regulation. The most common examples are listed companies while many other non-listed companies establish internal audit function voluntarily. Based on the Institute of Internal Auditors’ definition, the internal audit is «an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes». The innovative design of the program and its market led curriculum equips students with relevant, up to date, skills and knowledge in the areas of forensic accounting & internal audit. The goal of the curriculum is to give students the analytical and conceptual foundations and the necessary skills for future high-level financial executive positions in any country in the world. The program combines the theoretical rigor of fraud examination and internal audit with empirical, real-world aspects. The emphasis on the practical aspects of the course explains the need to use instructors with relevant professional qualifications and relevant experience in the fields of fraud and internal audit. Whilst the program provides students with a robust grounding in those areas, the curriculum also encourages critical thinking, fosters skills of research, analysis, synthesis, creativity, and ethical behaviour. The teaching method in the program is participatory and interactive, so that students can develop their interpersonal skills through active participation in the learning process. For example, class teaching and video presentations will be followed by critical discussions in groups. Also, through group projects the skills of working in a team will be developed. Moreover, recent research papers will be discussed in a panel format activity with a coordinator and discussants. The plan is achieved through a curriculum of seven core courses covering fraud examination and internal audit, one elective and a dissertation. |

Program Overview To combat climate change and environmental degradation, organizations need new, resource-efficient growth strategies aligned with sustainability principles. More and more companies globally are joining what has been termed as ‘decarbonizing megatrend.’ Policymakers in EU have set the goal to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 – having adopted a comprehensive action plan for a just and inclusive transition to green economy. Read more on European Green Deal. Digitalization is the use of digital technologies to change a business model and generate new revenue streams and value-creating opportunities. To recover from disruptions of traditional business models or to anticipate such disruptions, successful companies undergo a digital transformation. It is the process of moving to a digital business, leveraging digital information technology to entirely transform a business’ processes — evaluating and reimagining the way we do business. New technologies, digitalization of everything, and a green-economy approach change the business environment perspective and strategy. If a business wants to remain competitive in the market, delivering green products and services at the same time, they must change their management approach. Our graduates will be equipped to move into digital management careers where they are able to bridge the gap between business people and technology people – pushing forward innovative practices that organisations need to employ to respond to current challenges, in particular environmental and sustainability challenges. The program is nationally accredited by CYQAA and recognised by KYSATS. |

The Master’s Program in HRM has been designed to offer state-of-the-art knowledge to students concerning the management and development of individuals, teams and organizations as a whole. Its main aim is to offer students a challenging, supporting and constructive learning environment where theoretical perspectives and research insights are critically debated to understand how HR can contribute to the development of organizations of excellence. The Program’s defining characteristic is its dual focus on the theory and practice of HRM. Approximately 90% of the international trade in goods by volume is currently carried by sea, despite the development of other means of transport. Today’s seas are dotted with oil, cargo and passenger ships that are magnificently huge and complex. Most, if not all countries with strong economies have bustling and modernised ports. It is therefore imperative that stakeholders ensure the safe and efficient operation of ships; any technical failure or human error can cause a delay in shipment arrival dates and affect the business reputation and profit margins, more importantly it can cause precious lives. Moreover, the radical technological developments alongside increased environmental regulations require ship operators and managers with advanced technical as well as leadership and managerial skills and knowledge. This MSc Programme is unique in Cyprus and one of the few of its type globally. The degree combines marine engineering and management and provides you with the necessary skill set to work in executive posts in the modern maritime and industrial world. It is a major step towards the provision of an integrated approach to engineering and management education. More specifically, the core curriculum covers major marine engineering and management subjects and offers options for specialised shipping and commercial knowledge. You may also combine this MSc study with the acquisition of the professional international licence of the “Engineer Officer of the Watch" (EOOW) thereby acquiring valuable professional marine qualifications and experience. This attainment is highly regarded by shipping companies. You can attend and complete the requirements of both the MSc Academic Degree and the EOOW Professional Qualification within a period of approximately 18 months. The Programme includes, among others, the subjects of: Fundamentals of Marine Engineering, Marine Mechanical Systems Construction and Maintenance, Marine Electrical Equipment Construction and Maintenance, Ship Performance at Sea and Maritime Safety, Marine Machinery Monitoring and Maintenance Modelling, Commercial Management of Ships, International Maritime Law, Logistics and supply chain management. A wide range of opportunities, in demanding and challenging posts, is available to prospective graduates. The diversity of the maritime sector and subsector activities (forming the maritime industry), as well as of the world trade and transport includes many hundreds of large, medium and small firms (and many thousands operating internationally) all of them relying in varying degrees upon skilled and versatile professionals. In this context, our Programme has been carefully considered and designed to produce professionally competent and skillful engineers that are able to work at management and executive levels. Indicatively, the sectors of society and the economy that will benefit from the added value of this Programme’s graduates are:
It should be noted that the prospects of employment for the graduates of this Programme are excellent as shipping / ship management companies have a high demand for well-educated and trained marine engineers. Cyprus, as an established EU Member, is among the top maritime countries in the world and is already an established maritime and commercial business hub. The marine engineers are highly favoured for employment in other associated marine industries, such as company superintendents, surveying, insurance and shipbroking. They are also highly favoured for other employment and career paths in industry besides the shipping industry. Amongst many, these include power stations, hospital engineering, and production line engineering. All those need to be able to draw upon the same pool of well-educated people. It is also worth mentioning that the Programme is unique in Cyprus and one of the few offered worldwide. |

The Master of Science program in Structural Robustness for Extreme Loading Conditions will be the first postgraduate program specifically focusing on the special issue of “Extreme Loading Conditions on Structures” in Cyprus, in the whole Eastern Mediterranean Region, and most probably in whole Europe. This topic is usually not specifically addressed in usual courses of civil/structural engineering, which, in general, focus on “common” loading conditions. Unfortunately, the recent past shows that such “extreme” loading conditions, due to environmental and/or anthropic causes, may not be disregarded during the design process of a building and, in particular, in the design of strategic structures and infrastructures that should remain operative during emergencies. The curriculum of the MSc in Structural Robustness for Extreme Loading Conditions is designed to provide the necessary knowledge to students regarding the structural robustness for such extreme loading, taking into account various scenarios, as well as different types of buildings (housing, office, commercial and infrastructures), teaching how these extreme loading conditions should be handled, and how they might interact during a catastrophic event (a fire after an explosion, a fire after an earthquake, an explosion after an earthquake, etc.). The curriculum provides up-to-date knowledge in a number of different areas and covers multiple and essential subjects such as Structural Robustness and Risk Engineering and Risk Management. This will be achieved by specific lectures given by professional engineers as well as technicians from Civil Protection and/or Fire Department, who will present the specific issues and case studies. The lecturers are the world-renowned experts in their specific fields. The MSc in Structural Robustness for Extreme Loading Conditions brings together theory and practice and includes exposure to the latest methods, procedures and techniques used in the field, as well as various technological solutions necessary for the purpose of designing robust structures, which might safely resist to extreme loading conditions, avoiding disproportioned collapse in case of an accidental event. The MSc in Structural Robustness for Extreme Loading Conditions at the NUP is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge for becoming experts in design of robust structures that will allow them to play a significant role in this sector in Cyprus and abroad. |
