The Master in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice reflects the priorities of the University’s mission, is designed to provide a course of studies that meets local and national needs, promotes links with local communities and embraces modern pedagogy and learning technologies. The Master (MA) in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice will be offered by the School of Law that is dedicated to the academic excellence through teaching and research. Specializing in a particular field is a smart choice for everyone interested in pursuing a career in that field. In that perspective the specialization in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice provides a well-designed, practice oriented, academic, post graduate education for those, on the one hand, practicing already criminal law as lawyers, prosecutors or judges, and for those, on the other, who are graduate students, aspiring to become leaders in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure in a national and European environment. During recent decades transnational Financial crime has become a major area of concern for politicians and policy makers and an increasingly important area of research. This has transformed Financial crime from a very specific area of practice, to a “day-to-day” practice, similar to civil litigation with a lot of research, drafting, factual development and argument, but with more significant client contact, which tends to be very close. Our MA Specialization in Financial Crime and Criminal Justice intends to examine the phenomenon in terms of its recent emergence and further development, as well as to highlight typical forms and law enforcement responses to transnational organized crime. Accordingly, the aim of the program is not only to pursue an academic theoretical study, but also to enable theory to inform practice. The program is divided thematically between substantive issues of Financial crime and procedural issues within an Economic crime trial. In both cases emphasis is given on the transnational character of both the crime and the trial. Among the substantive areas which are covered are: Corporate Penal Law, Corruption – Bribery, Tax evasion, Organized crime, Money laundering, Misuse of Capital Market, Cybercrime, Fraud against the EU’s financial interests, Market Abuse, Cybercrime and Money Laundering. Participants will also learn how to deal with complex procedural matters arising in an Economic criminal trial with transnational elements, such as the principle of ne bis in idem, the rule of speciality in mutual assistance, the procedure in freezing property etc. |

The Master of Laws (LLM) programme aims to provide students the opportunity for specialization in two particular fields of legal science, (a) European Business Law and (b) Human Rights and Social Justice, both at a theoretical and at a practical level. It provides postgraduate education to holders of a Bachelor in Law or of some other relevant Bachelor (Political Science, European Politics, IR, Economics etc.). Mainly, but not exclusively, it addresses itself to individuals who work or intend to do so in fields relevant to legal science (lawyers, judges, legal consultants or in general employees of companies and of other private sector entities or organizations, members of the public service or of some other public or semi-public agency or organization, members of non-governmental organizations, diplomats etc.) It is expected that the programme will provide its graduates with additional qualifications and that it will enhance their cognitive as well as their managerial capacities when dealing with issues relevant to Law; this will help them enrich their career opportunities. Graduates of the programme also have the opportunity to pursue further studies at a PhD level. The main academic aims of the program are: (a) the deepening of knowledge in specialized fields of legal science with theoretical and practical importance, as well as (b) the broadening of the understanding of legal science and of its implementation in a comparative European and International context. The programme explores the function of national law and its interrelation with European and International Law. The methods of interpretation and of the application of law are analyzed in a practical context, while emphasis is given both to the theoretical parameters and practical implementation, with an overall view to enhancing the capacity of students to confront current challenges and problems, especially those they may be encountered in the European and International environment, either in the field of commerce and entrepreneurship, or in the field of human rights and social justice. Students are given the opportunity to engage in academic research and the application of legal practices and models, gaining well-founded specialization in legal fields of particular importance. Career Prospects The Programme mainly, but not exclusively, addresses itself to individuals who work or intend to do so in fields relevant to legal science: lawyers, judges, legal consultants or in general employees of companies and of other private sector entities or organizations, members of the public service or of some other public or semi-public agency or organization, members of non-governmental organizations, diplomats etc. Access to Further Studies Graduates of the programme can be accepted into Third Cycle degrees (Doctoral Degree) |

Neapolis University Pafos | Department of Accounting and Finance | MSc in Forensic Accounting | 3 semesters | Campus based | SEMESTER 1
SEMESTER 2
SEMESTER 3
|
The Postgraduate Study Programme MSc in Forensic Accounting is a joint Inter-university Degree Study Programme between the Department of Accounting and Finance of University of Western Macedonia (GR) and the Department of Accounting and Finance of Neapolis University Pafos. Students and graduates of the joint programme in Forensic Accounting are eligible to apply and get the certificate CICA (Certified Internal Control Auditor) from the Institute of Internal Controls – IIC (www.theiic.org) through the Greek branch ELINESEE. The course focuses on two interrelated areas a) fraud deterrence, avoidance and examination and b) internal audit. The fraud cases, both internal and external, are common and they have a negative impact on businesses; institutions; employees and the wider community. Contrary to the perception that fraud concerns more the major institutions, based on the global studies the truth seems to be substantially different. The Institute of Internal Auditors defines fraud as «a knowing misrepresentation of truth or concealment of a material fact to induce another to act to or her detriment», while the association of the Certified Fraud Examiners defines it as «any illegal act characterized by deceit, concealment or violation of trust». Frauds are distinguished to internal and external frauds from which internal frauds are far more dangerous. The association of the Certified Fraud Examiners defines the occupational/ internal fraud as «the use of one’s occupation for personal enrichment through the deliberate misuse or misapplication of the organization’s resources or assets». Even though there are many different definitions, the substance is the same. Internal fraud is an attack from within, committed by persons that organizations have trusted. Despite the fact that the exact financial loss of occupational fraud cannot be estimated precisely due the fact that many frauds remain undetected or undisclosed, ACFE estimates that companies in the US, lose 5% of their total revenue to occupational fraud and abuse, while the most vulnerable organizations seem to be the smaller organisations rather than multinational companies. Taking into consideration that a) the great majority of companies in an economy are small and medium size, and b) the financial impact of fraud on these companies is much more significant than in the case of their large competitors, the need for fraud awareness and fraud risk management is obvious. As far as the second main area covered by the programme, that of internal audit, its importance in the current business structure is so apparent that in many instances the establishment of internal audit function is mandatory by the Law or regulation. The most common examples are listed companies while many other non-listed companies establish internal audit function voluntarily. Based on the Institute of Internal Auditors’ definition, the internal audit is «an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes». The innovative design of the program and its market led curriculum equips students with relevant, up to date, skills and knowledge in the areas of forensic accounting & internal audit. The goal of the curriculum is to give students the analytical and conceptual foundations and the necessary skills for future high-level financial executive positions in any country in the world. The program combines the theoretical rigor of fraud examination and internal audit with empirical, real-world aspects. The emphasis on the practical aspects of the course explains the need to use instructors with relevant professional qualifications and relevant experience in the fields of fraud and internal audit. Whilst the program provides students with a robust grounding in those areas, the curriculum also encourages critical thinking, fosters skills of research, analysis, synthesis, creativity, and ethical behaviour. The teaching method in the program is participatory and interactive, so that students can develop their interpersonal skills through active participation in the learning process. For example, class teaching and video presentations will be followed by critical discussions in groups. Also, through group projects the skills of working in a team will be developed. Moreover, recent research papers will be discussed in a panel format activity with a coordinator and discussants. The plan is achieved through a curriculum of seven core courses covering fraud examination and internal audit, one elective and a dissertation. |

The Distance Learning Postgraduate Study Programme MSc in Forensic Accounting is a joint Inter-university Degree Study Programme between the Department of Accounting and Finance of University of Western Macedonia (GR)and the Department of Accounting and Finance of Neapolis University Pafos.
