Despite its international character, the shipping sector is highly regulated compared to other sectors of the economy that also operate in a global business context. In reality, the shipping sector needs legal advisors and managers who are well equipped with the knowledge of both legal and business subjects, capable of functioning in different jurisdictions and dealing with a plethora of legal and business challenges.

Therefore understanding the interrelation between regulations, transportation, business, economic growth and globalisation has become an even more demanding and complex task. Against this, any advocate or business professional has to be an expert in both disciplines: Law and Shipping Business, in order to be a credible consultant. It is therefore the ambition of this Programme to provide students with a thorough understanding of the integration of Law & Business. This practically means that the modern shipping professional, either jurist or manager, will be educated on the detailed international regulatory framework as well as the specialised managerial and business practices and the economics that govern this unique industry. This will be their competitive advantage.

Accordingly, the Programme covers all legal subjects that are necessary for a maritime lawyer; at the same time, it prepares students to become maritime business executives. The proposed Postgraduate Degree aims to develop this combination of essential knowledge and skill-sets, much needed in today and tomorrow’s maritime sector.

You are also offered the opportunity of Concentration, based on the Elective Group of your choice, in one of three areas:

Commercial Shipping and Trade Practices;
Financial Management;
Oil and Gas Management.

Students are eligible for the MA, if they hold an undergraduate business-oriented Degree. Students are eligible for the LLM, if they hold an LLB Degree, or a relevant Bachelor Degree combined with an extensive professional legal experience.

Key Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this Programme, the students should be able to:

  • Advise, litigate and negotiate based on the rules of admiralty, international trade, and marine insurance, law of carriage of goods, corporate law and the relevant regulatory context.
  • Demonstrate negotiation skills, communication and professional skills, both oral and written.
  • Apply independent analysis, research and writing on both law and business.
  • Understand the aspects relating to international dispute resolution (conventional and alternative dispute resolution) and the importance of cooperation and amicable dispute settlement without the sacrifice of efficiency and perseverance in justifiable goals and rights.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the structures, processes and institutional practices of shipping and trade in the global marketplace.
  • Apply tools and techniques relevant to various aspects of the shipping business, along with broad business skills required in managerial roles within the maritime and associated industries.
  • Develop, implement and promote activities relevant to law, shipping business, international trade and shipping management by making good use of the combined knowledge from the aforementioned disciplines and critically assess the situations and phenomena of the industry as educated professionals.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate knowledge and application of methods required to proceed to a research degree (MPhil, PhD etc.)

Career Opportunities

A wide range of career opportunities, in demanding and challenging posts, is available to prospective graduates that are positioned favourably in the local labour market for the newly created employment opportunities.

The diversity of the maritime and trade sectors (forming the “blue economy” sectors) includes many hundreds of large, medium and small firms, all of which are in need of skilled and versatile professionals.

This Programme is carefully designed to produce professionally competent and skilful professionals, lawyers and managers that are able to work at executive and managerial levels. Indicatively, the sectors of society and the economy that are being benefited from the added value of this Programme’s graduates are:

The University of Nicosia’s Master of Public Health (MPH) programme covers the main domains of Public Health Practice (Health Protection, Health Improvement, Health Services Provision) and offers the opportunity to specialise in a broad range of public health topics. The programme places a strong emphasis on global aspects of public health, like the epidemiology and prevention of both chronic and infectious conditions. There is a focus on important public health issues in both developed and developing countries for preparedness in disaster risk reduction, prevention, response and recovery.

The curriculum is based on a dynamic approach, with continuous updating to address new and emerging issues threatening population health: climate change, armed conflict, forced migration, pandemics and more. This programme has been carefully designed according to the standards of the UK Faculty of Public Health.

A unique feature of our MPH programme is its international orientation: the programme is part of a Medical School with faculty, teaching hospitals and students from across the globe.

UK Faculty of Public Health Part A Exam

The MPH programme has been designed with the FPH Part A curriculum in mind, and the learning outcomes correlate to a large extent with those of that exam.

Students who pass the FPH Part A exam are demonstrating a professional level of knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis of public health, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge and skills to the practice of public health. Success in the Part A examination also leads to election into Diplomate Membership of the Faculty.

Upon graduation, they will be ready to work in the public sector at local, national and international health agencies. As the nature of work continues to evolve, achieving a healthy work-life balance has become increasingly important. The new world of work places greater emphasis on flexible schedules, remote work, and collaboration across time zones and borders.

Organizations are also increasingly recognizing the importance of work-life balance and are implementing policies and practices that enable employees to achieve this balance, which turns out to be a critical factor in employee satisfaction, motivation and performance. Therefore, the human resources function assumes a far more strategic role than before in driving business results and effectiveness.

Students attending the program will gain the required skills and knowledge to help organisations align their people strategy with business strategy and navigate confidently in today’s competitive and uncertain environment.

The program is nationally accredited by CYQAA and recognized by KYSATS.

The Postgraduate Study Programme MSc in Forensic Accounting is a joint Inter-university Degree Study Programme between the Department of Accounting and Finance of University of Western Macedonia (GR) and the Department of Accounting and Finance of Neapolis University Pafos.

Students and graduates of the joint programme in Forensic Accounting are eligible to apply and get the certificate CICA (Certified Internal Control Auditor) from the Institute of Internal Controls – IIC (www.theiic.org) through the Greek branch ELINESEE.

The course focuses on two interrelated areas a) fraud deterrence, avoidance and examination and b) internal audit.

The fraud cases, both internal and external, are common and they have a negative impact on businesses; institutions; employees and the wider community. Contrary to the perception that fraud concerns more the major institutions, based on the global studies the truth seems to be substantially different.

The Institute of Internal Auditors defines fraud as «a knowing misrepresentation of truth or concealment of a material fact to induce another to act to or her detriment», while the association of the Certified Fraud Examiners defines it as «any illegal act characterized by deceit, concealment or violation of trust».

Frauds are distinguished to internal and external frauds from which internal frauds are far more dangerous. The association of the Certified Fraud Examiners defines the occupational/ internal fraud as «the use of one’s occupation for personal enrichment through the deliberate misuse or misapplication of the organization’s resources or assets». Even though there are many different definitions, the substance is the same. Internal fraud is an attack from within, committed by persons that organizations have trusted.

Despite the fact that the exact financial loss of occupational fraud cannot be estimated precisely due the fact that many frauds remain undetected or undisclosed, ACFE estimates that companies in the US, lose 5% of their total revenue to occupational fraud and abuse, while the most vulnerable organizations seem to be the smaller organisations rather than multinational companies. Taking into consideration that a) the great majority of companies in an economy are small and medium size, and b) the financial impact of fraud on these companies is much more significant than in the case of their large competitors, the need for fraud awareness and fraud risk management is obvious.

As far as the second main area covered by the programme, that of internal audit, its importance in the current business structure is so apparent that in many instances the establishment of internal audit function is mandatory by the Law or regulation. The most common examples are listed companies while many other non-listed companies establish internal audit function voluntarily.

Based on the Institute of Internal Auditors’ definition, the internal audit is «an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes».

The innovative design of the program and its market led curriculum equips students with relevant, up to date, skills and knowledge in the areas of forensic accounting & internal audit. The goal of the curriculum is to give students the analytical and conceptual foundations and the necessary skills for future high-level financial executive positions in any country in the world. The program combines the theoretical rigor of fraud examination and internal audit with empirical, real-world aspects. The emphasis on the practical aspects of the course explains the need to use instructors with relevant professional qualifications and relevant experience in the fields of fraud and internal audit. Whilst the program provides students with a robust grounding in those areas, the curriculum also encourages critical thinking, fosters skills of research, analysis, synthesis, creativity, and ethical behaviour.

The teaching method in the program is participatory and interactive, so that students can develop their interpersonal skills through active participation in the learning process. For example, class teaching and video presentations will be followed by critical discussions in groups. Also, through group projects the skills of working in a team will be developed. Moreover, recent research papers will be discussed in a panel format activity with a coordinator and discussants.

The plan is achieved through a curriculum of seven core courses covering fraud examination and internal audit, one elective and a dissertation.

Program Overview
The Master of Science (MSc) in Green and Digital Management has been created in response to the challenges presented to modern organizations and the new generation of managers by two powerful global trends: green transition and digitalization. New challenges demand new perspectives and knowledge as well as enhanced managerial skills and competencies.

To combat climate change and environmental degradation, organizations need new, resource-efficient growth strategies aligned with sustainability principles. More and more companies globally are joining what has been termed as ‘decarbonizing megatrend.’ Policymakers in EU have set the goal to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 – having adopted a comprehensive action plan for a just and inclusive transition to green economy. Read more on European Green Deal.

Digitalization is the use of digital technologies to change a business model and generate new revenue streams and value-creating opportunities. To recover from disruptions of traditional business models or to anticipate such disruptions, successful companies undergo a digital transformation. It is the process of moving to a digital business, leveraging digital information technology to entirely transform a business’ processes — evaluating and reimagining the way we do business. New technologies, digitalization of everything, and a green-economy approach change the business environment perspective and strategy. If a business wants to remain competitive in the market, delivering green products and services at the same time, they must change their management approach.

Our graduates will be equipped to move into digital management careers where they are able to bridge the gap between business people and technology people – pushing forward innovative practices that organisations need to employ to respond to current challenges, in particular environmental and sustainability challenges.

The program is nationally accredited by CYQAA and recognised by KYSATS.

The Master of Science in Health Services Administration (MHSA) is a new programme offered by the University of Nicosia Medical School. This modern programme aims to rigorously prepare students for leadership positions in the rapidly growing field of health services. It serves to advance professionals’ careers within the health service industry locally and internationally.

A primary goal of the MHSA is to equip professionals and managers in hospitals, clinics, pharmaceuticals, insurance firms, biotechnology firms, and other health-related settings, with the crucial skills to manage and lead profitable healthcare organizations while, at the same time, delivering high quality services with patient safety at the forefront.

Leadership in Healthcare

Students acquire managerial and leadership skills in key areas such as operations management, legal and ethical decision making, finance, epidemiology, biostatistics, human resource management, health economics, clinical systems management, managerial accounting,  quality management, patient safety and more.

All offered courses have been designed specifically for the health services sector. Through utilization of theory, in a research project, field project, or elective pathway, this coursework allows students to analyse complex workplace management.

Entrepreneurship in Healthcare

This dynamic programme emphasizes entrepreneurship in the health care industry. It challenges students to pursue advanced initiatives and address existing problems in their current work environments through the development of business plans and the implementation of field projects.

For instance, students could pursue the implementation of new systems and processes in order to reduce patient waiting times in their hospital/clinic. Another example in this course pathway would be to  prepare a business plan for establishing an integrated practice unit in a hospital.

Managing a Crisis such as a Pandemic

Students of the MHSA will acquire crisis management skills enabling them to respond effectively to adverse situations. For instance, in the case of the COVID-19 pandemic, essential elements of the program include: knowledge on how pandemics spread within a population, evaluation of measures which could limit such spread, an understanding of how hospital settings and facilities should be structured to increase effectiveness and ensure the safety of both patients and healthcare personnel, as well as an understanding of how new technologies (e.g. telemedicine and big data analytics) could be of assistance. Moreover, students will explore the redistribution of resources in setting up crisis management plans.

Student Outcomes

Our multidisciplinary curriculum focuses on current and emerging issues in the global healthcare industry and prepares graduates to tackle real world challenges in leadership positions at the local, national and international level. Upon graduation, they will be able to pursue or further their career in a multitude of settings, such as hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, insurance firms, health departments, biotechnology firms, start-ups and more. Specifically, graduates can manage and lead healthcare organisations and units through critical evaluation of the industry, efficient operational management, prudent financial planning and effective human resource management. Within our international medical programmes, our graduates have a 99% career placement rate. The strong emphasis on innovation and technological advancements enables graduates to provide vision and initiate strategic change in healthcare organisations.

Integration of CIS Model representation & Use Cases to Coursework

A significant feature of the program is the integration of CIS model representation and use cases to coursework. Specifically, mathematical models representing CIS at different abstraction layers and realistic use cases for intelligent CIS will be used throughout the various courses in order to:

  • Provide students with realistic examples on how to model, simulate, monitor, control, manage and optimize such systems
  • Examine possible commonalities/differences/interdependencies among various CIS domains
  • Better illustrate various concepts

Models and use cases from electric power and renewable energy systems, smart water systems, and intelligent transportation systems are considered in a stand-alone manner, or in a high-level integrated simulation platform developed at KIOS CoE. Models and use cases for CIS cybersecurity and telecommunication networks used in CIS systems are examined in a horizontal dimension across one or more CIS, allowing to better understand how such timely and important topics must be integrated in intelligent critical infrastructures.

The two application courses of the MSc program revisit these models and use cases focusing on current and future challenges in CIS systems, such as energy efficiency, safety, security, reliability, fault detection, big data processing, h/w & s/w design integration in IoT, etc.

Program Objectives

The main objective of the MSc in Intelligent Critical Infrastructure Systems (CIS) program is to teach highly innovative methods, tools, and technologies for the monitoring, control, management, and security of CIS for a competent workforce that will be recruited by local and regional authorities and international companies seeking to make CIS more reliable, safe, resilient, efficient, and sustainable. In addition, the program is designed to transfer knowledge on the research and innovation challenges faced by modern CIS and cultivate student interest in pursuing a career path in research and innovation. Doing so, it is expected to contribute to the transformation of the research and innovation culture of Cyprus and the Mediterranean-Middle East region. The program is open to students from different technical backgrounds, spanning the different areas of science and engineering.

The program is intended to:

  • Provide the theoretical basis for the monitoring, control, management, and security of intelligent critical infrastructure systems, with associated modelling, simulation, and design methods and algorithms.
  • Produce graduates equipped to pursue careers that involve design, modelling, analysis, control and optimization, as well as business aspects of critical infrastructure systems.
  • Offer students from a broad engineering and science background the opportunity to acquire ICT knowledge of intelligent critical infrastructure systems.
  • Provide a solid background that will enable graduates to further continue their studies towards a PhD degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering on the topic of Intelligent CIS.

The program will result in students developing an understanding of the knowledge and a critical awareness of Intelligent CIS. Students will graduate with relevant and up-to-date knowledge that will allow them to find employment in the CIS industry or continue their studies at the PhD level.

Program Learning Outcomes

When graduating from the program, students will have acquired the skills to:

  • Deal with particular CIS challenges, understand the specific technical and management features, and the specific risks and security issues related to the considered CIS.
  • Apply innovative ICT techniques to address monitoring, control, management, and security of CIS at the technical, managerial, and policy level.
  • Conduct both theoretical and applied research contributing to the transformation of the research and innovation culture of Cyprus.
