Profile of Programme

The Master's degree in European Studies is offered by the Department of French and European Studies of the University of Cyprus in Greek and international languages. Its courses are taught in English. According to the linguistic profile of students, some courses can occasionally be taught in Greek or French. The aims of the Master's program can be summarized as follows:

From an academic viewpoint, the program aims to cover an obvious gap in the programs offered internationally in the field of postgraduate European Studies. More specifically, it aims to move away from the usual frame of such programs which are usually based on a dominant politico-economic approach.
Thus, the postgraduate program aims to investigate specific cultural issues related to Europe and to see how these issues relate to philosophical, literary, visual and other cultural narratives. The program puts forward ways of studying European cultural phenomena in a synthetic way, combining a specific European conjuncture with its diachronic depth.

From a research point of view, the aim of the program is for its graduates to be able to carry out doctoral studies in specific fields of European cultural studies, combining them with European literature studies, comparative literature, visual and art studies, European history, sociology, anthropology and political sciences.

A significant feature of the program is the integration of CIS model representation and use cases to coursework. Specifically, mathematical models representing CIS at different abstraction layers and realistic use cases for intelligent CIS will be used throughout the various courses in order to:

  • Provide students with realistic examples on how to model, simulate, monitor, control, manage and optimize such systems
  • Examine possible commonalities/differences/interdependencies among various CIS domains
  • Better illustrate various concepts

Models and use cases from electric power and renewable energy systems, smart water systems, and intelligent transportation systems are considered in a stand-alone manner, or in a high-level integrated simulation platform developed at KIOS CoE. Models and use cases for CIS cybersecurity and telecommunication networks used in CIS systems are examined in a horizontal dimension across one or more CIS, allowing to better understand how such timely and important topics must be integrated in intelligent critical infrastructures.

The two application courses of the MSc program revisit these models and use cases focusing on current and future challenges in CIS systems, such as energy efficiency, safety, security, reliability, fault detection, big data processing, h/w & s/w design integration in IoT, etc.

Program Objectives

The main objective of the MSc in Intelligent Critical Infrastructure Systems (CIS) program is to teach highly innovative methods, tools, and technologies for the monitoring, control, management, and security of CIS for a competent workforce that will be recruited by local and regional authorities and international companies seeking to make CIS more reliable, safe, resilient, efficient, and sustainable. Department of English Studies BA in English Language and Literature - University of Cyprus 8 semesters with tuition fees Campus based 1. Anglophone Literature & Cultural Studies Track, 2. Theoretical & Applied Linguistics Τrack, 3.Translation Studies Track

The new structure of the BA in English consists of the following three different tracks within the same Programme. The tracks are areas of specialization within the same degree and have been designed in order to create a flexible, more diverse degree and to provide students with the opportunity to focus on specific areas of interest during their studies. Click on one of them to see the respective curriculum in detail:

Anglophone Literature & Cultural Studies Track

Theoretical & Applied Linguistics Τrack

Translation Studies Track

In particular, the courses in the first two semesters (1st year of studies) – and some courses in later semesters – are common for all three tracks. At the beginning of the 2nd year of studies (3rd semester) students must opt for one of the three tracks offered by the respective Sections. The tracks may overlap at various points, thus students are given the opportunity to customise their programme of studies in their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years by choosing compulsory and elective courses from any of the three tracks. The choice of track must be finalised by the 5th semester of studies the latest.

According to the new structure of the BA in English students must fulfil the following requirements:

17 compulsory courses in the 1st and 2nd year

16 compulsory and elective courses in the 3rd and 4th year
3 levels of a Foreign Language courses (other than English), offered by the Language Center. Students may choose to prepare a final thesis in place of 2 electives in their 4th year of studies.

4 University elective courses (from at least three different Schools of the University of Cyprus)

As university elective courses, students may opt for a foreign language, other than the one they have chosen as part of their compulsory three-level language component (see above). If they decide to do so, they may take either one or two levels of the same language, which will count as one or two university electives respectively. They do not have the option of two languages at the first level, though.
