T

he Master's program "Environmental Conservation and Management'' in  collaboration with the Terrestrial Ecosystem Management Laboratory of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) are organizing during the current academic year 2022-2023 a Series of Lectures with the general title "Women and Environmental Sciences". The 5th cycle of the Series opens on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, with the webinar of Dr Ada Pastor, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Aquatic Ecology of the University of Girona, on the topic: «Women in Science: The Gender Gap and Visibility in Freshwater Sciences».

The teleconference will start at 18:00 and will be broadcast through the University's e-learning tools at the link https://bit.ly/3fJUO3K.

The speech is 'dedicated' to female researchers in the fields of aquatic ecosystems. The presence of women in the science of aquatic ecosystems has become more noticeable nowadays. However, as in other scientific fields, the presence of women decreases at the highest stages of their careers. Dr Pastor will present the team, the work and the actions of the Gender and Science Group of the Iberian Society of Limnology. It will focus on its presentation, the participation of women in related research fields and the gender stereotypes they face. The research career and copy of a scientist's work depends on many parameters, such as international presence at conferences, awards and distinctions, participation in editorial boards of prestigious scientific journals and/or in program committees of international conferences. However, as the presentation will show, gender biases in career opportunities do occur. Concluding the presentation, the discussion will focus on proposals to reduce gender-related discrimination in academia.
